This weekend will be spent sleeping. I’m worn out from the fun but busy time I had last weekend.

My twin brother is now married – it was an absolutely awesome ceremony, I really appreciated the words the officiant said – quoting Shakespeare, and drawing on Aristotle and Socrates. My eldest niece (nearly two years old) was the flower girl, and my older brother served as best man (and assistant flower-girl). The two of them were quite a pair; my niece was tired and DONE by the time she was supposed to walk down the aisle throwing the flower petals, so she ended up being carried by my older brother, who then made sure the flowers were strewn appropriately after handing her off to my brother-in-law. At the end of the ceremony she sat down and started to try picking up all the petals to put them away – it was pretty adorable!

Mom and I took a trip to Leavenworth, which was lovely. Neither of us had ever been, so it was fun to see the place and enjoy a little morning stroll (it was just TOO HOT when we got there Sunday evening, so Monday morning was when we really enjoyed a walk). I really like the park they have by the waterfront, though we didn’t walk the full length of it due to the fact that there had recently been a sighting of a Mama Bear and her cubs, (and, unfortunately, a cougar attack the day before).

I’m glad I got that fun over the weekend, though, because this week has been ROUGH. Just a busy time at work, and then…

Ants.  Ants ants everywhere – particularly annoying is the fact that they’ve decided to make themselves at home in our SMOKE DETECTORS. Particularly, the one in my bedroom… which went off at 2:30, and 3:30, and 4:30, in the morning on Thursday morning and… more often after that after 5. It was not a pleasant morning, in the slightest.

So we’ve got the impacted alarms silenced for now (thankfully there are still plenty of others active – renovations in the past few years means that every bedroom and hallway has to have one), and have an exterminator (recommended by a friend) coming tomorrow. Which means tonight I get to move some furniture and figure out HOW IN THE WORLD I’m going to make my cat happy while they’re spraying in my bedroom… oh boy….

  1. We’ve only just recently gotten our ant problem under control but the species we were dealing with are notoriously hard to eradicate. I hope your invaders will be easier. I’m wondering if you mind sharing the readings or excerpts you heard at your brother’s wedding (congrats to him btw!). I’m still working on our officiant’s script and would love some inspiration. Thanks for the coffee, as always 🙂

  2. Hi Ali,
It’s now Tuesday arvo here and I slept through the morning and am parked here with a cup of tea trying to rally some energy and a few brain cells. I had the flu jab last week and was under the weather beforehand anyway so I’ve chugging along in second gear atm unable to consider moving into first.
The wedding sounds beautiful and your niece adorable. Sounds like she stole away a bit of the limelight from her Mum and Dad. Well, at least I think it was her Mum and Dad.
I enjoyed your tales of the wildlife and it’s good to hear that we Australians don’t have a monopoly on the subject.
Hope you have a good week and the ants are sent packing.
    Best wishes,
    Rowena

  3. Ants! We had a single spider in our smoke detector and she kept us hopping at all hours for a week until we found her. I enjoyed your wedding stories, especially the sweet but worn out flower girl. I might try to join your group this weekend!
