Insecure Writers Support Group: Hello again!

This is my monthly post as part of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group, a great group of supportive writers, helping one another through our writing ups-and-downs.

There is also a great Facebook Community for more daily connection!  More posts from the group are tagged on Twitter at #IWSG, and be sure to check out the Twitter account and the new Instagram as well!

Wow… May snuck up on me so fast that I completely missed the IWSG post! Looking back it appears I also missed April… I think these are the first months I’ve missed since I started participating in the summer of 2014! Not a bad streak!  So, I have re-signed-up (because if you miss posts you get removed, this helps to keep the list from being bogged down with inactive or irrelevant blogs – makes a lot of sense!)

So now we are in June, summer is here, and it’s time for me to start focusing up again. I’ve decided to focus in a bit on my non-fiction writing, since the fiction writing has been giving me such a hard time lately. Aside from my struggle to revise and rewrite the WIP I finished the first draft of a few years ago, I’ve also been hard pressed to find any ideas that draw more than a paragraph or two out of me.

So I return to my other writing-love, non-fiction. I was one of those kids who was glad when I got assigned a paper rather than an exam. Give me a goal number of words or pages, and a topic to research and I will happily create something. In high school we were required to do a creative component with our semester projects, and I always wanted to involve writing in my projects. It got to the point where my teacher told me I wasn’t allowed to make another book… so I wrote a newspaper instead!

I haven’t wanted to talk too much about what I’ll actually be writing – part of it is because I have so many different ideas in my mind that I haven’t quite nailed down where I’m going to start. I don’t have a thesis figured out so it makes talking about the project challenging. But I am gathering ideas, have done a bit of research over the past few months, and now have the goal to get something written this month.  I’ll likely start out with small things, blog posts and mini-articles that build up to a larger project.

Whatever may come, it feels good to be writing again. My weaving takes a different kind of focus, and I’ve missed the energy of writing, the feeling that comes when I figure out just how to transform thoughts into words that can be shared with others. It feels good to be sliding back into that.

  1. Well, welcome back! 🙂 Good luck with your new project. I have the same trouble when I first start working on a story idea –it’s hard to talk about it when it’s just a little nugget of a notion and I don’t have a clear pitch line. Keep on with your research, the thesis will come to you before you know it!

  2. Non-fiction has more of a “stream of consciousness” feel to me, which I like…and it’s fun to share real life adventures with others as well…here’s to more writing this summer!
