If we were having coffee this week I’d invite you to join me for a homemade latte (or drip coffee if you’d like, or tea). I have been playing around with making eggnog lattes, and would be happy to make you one. If you’re an eggnog fan. It does seem like people either LOVE it or HATE it. I fall into the LOVE it category.
Most of my family celebrates Christmas in one form or another, so if you’re joining me today you’ll get to take in some of the festive decorations. One of the perks of living with my mom is that I get to benefit from her holiday decorating — and Christmas is one of those holidays that she does a pretty good job with.
Over the years things have accumulated and evolved — this year we have the Santa Room (it started out as a little Santa Tree, but eventually there were too many to keep contained to a small tree), a window of snowmen and snowflakes, and the regular Christmas tree. Not to mention lights outside. It’s overall pretty festive, which I appreciate!
This year, since my large family is no longer centrally located, the celebrations are somewhat subdued. I’m going to my Dad’s one day for a meal with him and my step-mom. Christmas even I’m actually doing some childcare in the morning, and then might go to a late service that night with my mom — it will depend on how my energy is and if I feel like dragging myself out of the house at that hour. I do love church services during the holidays though, the music and magic of the season really appeals to me.
Christmas day is pretty low key. Mom and I will do some present exchanging, and then my brother and his boyfriend will join us for more present exchanges and dinner. I have to go back to work on Tuesday, so I’m planning on spending Monday evening doing not-much and just relaxing.

Christmas Eve is our big day of religious celebration. In our tradition without Santa Claus and gifts, Christmas Day is for calm and rest.
Today I plan to participate in an event I remember from my childhood, “Las Posadas.” a procession in a bilingual community commemorating the journey of Mary and Joseph.

Las Posadas sounds very cool – what an awesome community celebration.
My religious beliefs are complicated (whose aren’t?) but for me the idea of Christmas is very much centered around togetherness, giving, and kindness. I really enjoyed the low-key day of calm and rest that I ended up having. I hear about those people who spend their Christmas Day’s running around from family to family, and I just can’t wrap my head around it. For us it was always an at-home kind of day.

Love the Santa room! And is that a wood burning fireplace? Jealous. Ours is gas so we just get the ambiance, but not the awesome aroma of wood smoke. We’ll spend Christmas Eve at home as we’re expecting 1 – 3″ and the roads will be messy. Then Christmas at my mom-in-laws, then sister-in-laws.. Have a very Merry Christmas!

It is a wood burning fireplace! We try to put it to good use – although the fire-log we used this time was not so good. I LOVE the smell of it, so comforting!

Christmas Eve will be filled with pie baking and cookie making, then the opening of one gift for our four-year-old + new pajamas for the three of us tonight. We'll drink hot chocolate and The Night Before Christmas before bed.
Tomorrow will be filled with presents and presence. French toast and sausage for breakfast while stockings are explored. My side of the family (dad, brother, daughter and their significant others) comes out to the farm and we eat a large lunch (lasagna, salad, fresh baked bread, as is tradition) and open the final gifts.
I truly love how our holiday traditions have evolved and continue to 🙂

It’s so much fun to watch the change in traditions through the years, as family structures change. One of the things I’m looking forward to is spending Christmas with my Niece at some point in the next few years – the Holidays with kids is something very special!
LOVE that the Night Before Christmas is part of your tradition. Growing up my Dad would read that to us every Christmas eve. Last year he made a recording of him reading it – so this year I did curl up and listen to him reading it again. ❤
