Monday Updates: Week 4.

Wow… week 4. I can’t believe it’s actually been 4 weeks…

There are, as is the norm these days, a lot of stories to pay attention to.

Trump continues to make questionable appointments to his cabinet.  Such as Scott Pruitt, who is suing the EPA on climate change, to be head of the EPA.

He’s also been ignoring what are traditionally supposed to be daily intelligence and security briefings. His reasoning? “I’m, like, a smart person. I don’t have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years.” (yes, you read that right… he said eight years…).

And then there’s the Russian involvement in our election and the CIA findings about Russian meddling to help him. There are a lot of sources on this, I’ve put a bunch of them together in one page.  More and more I’m hoping to assemble these “More You Know” style pages to compile information about specific topics.

Good News

I’ve gotten involved with a group called “Local Love Brigade.” It started out with a chapter in Vermont, and there is now one in North Carolina, Massachusetts, Washington and the one I started up in Oregon. These groups have the goal of responding to instances of hatred with a shower of love. Sending cards, letters, and postcards to businesses, churches, and individuals in our local areas who have been victims of hate.  If you’re interested in joining one of the groups, or starting your own, let me know! It’s a great way to make a difference — and a way that all can get involved in. It’s a great project to bring kids into as well.

Sometimes we have to keep an eye out for special stories that can remind us of the good that is in the world. People reaching out to help one another – such as the #MissionMuslimPreorder project.

Join in spreading the word about Trump and Russia. This is important, it needs to be paid attention to, and we should not let it go.  This Is Not Normal.

Start or Join a Local Love Brigade as a way to counteract hatred at a very personal level.

Brush up on how to stand up against hate.

Jennifer Hofmann has put together a good list of materials – including some sample scripts for calling your representatives on a variety of issues.  Check it out!

Super Important Action Item

Take care of yourself and do something this week that brings you joy. I have heard a lot over the past week from people who are struggling. It’s a hard time, to be sure, but it can also be a time of light and life – so take a moment to allow yourself to let some of that into your world!
