Today’s post is a part of the Weekend Coffee Share, graciously hosted by Part Time Monster every weekend. A time for us to come together, share a cup of coffee (or our beverage of choice) to share some of what is going on in our lives. It’s a lovely check-in!
If we were having coffee I’d tell you that this weekend is going to be dedicated to writing and reading. I don’t get the chance to preach very often, but I’m preaching on Sunday, so some of Saturday needs to be spent finalizing the sermon. I’m hoping that I can get that done pretty early so that I can spend most of the day participating in Dewey’s 24-hour Read-a-thon! I have a stack of easy-read fun books I want to dig into… been re-reading some Babysittter’s Club books, and I have a new Rick Riordan, and the next Miss Peregrine’s! It could be a day of fun light reading – which I could really use!
In part thanks to my easy-reading binge-reading streak, I’ve completed my Goodreads Reading Challenge! I’m still working on a few other challenges, but feeling good about my reading this year 🙂
If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I’ve been having fun with Nerd In The Brain‘s Go Play challenge! It’s been so much fun — and it’s not too late to join in! There’s an awesome Halloween scavenger hunt going on, and spooky Halloween challenges with Part Time Monster!
I’m also preparing for NaNoWriMo – I have to figure out what draft I’ll be trying to write for it… but that’ll be something I can think about after Sunday.
And finally, I’d tell you that I’m going to host a little party here on Eclectic Alli! To celebrate my favorite holiday!
Yup, I’m throwing a Halloween Party! A Halloween COSTUME party to be exact. I hope you’ll consider joining in the fun… and I’ll be sharing more about the party next weekend during coffee. For now, I’d better get back to the sermon work!

Sounds like you have some pretty neat things coming up! I know the sermon will be wonderful! I was going to do Dewey’s Reading thing but didn’t ever find the info (or the blog) until this morning. I still don’t know much about it!

I ended up just getting two books read for Dewey’s (both young-young YA books so pretty fast reads)…. I need to see when the spring date is and see if I can plan better for it. Basically it’s 24-hours where people are all trying to do a marathon read, checking in on Social media with one another throughout (and there are prizes and things). 🙂

That could also be done with a smaller group, informally. I participated in a 48 hour reading challenge about eight years ago. I met a lot of bloggers, got titles of books to read and was introduced to Good Reads that weekend!

All the best with your sermon. That’s a big deal. I’ve done a bit of public speaking but a sermon is as I said, a big deal. However, I understand that God gets to do much of the hard yards so you have an excellent mentor!
I live in Australia so I try to give an Australian flavour to my coffee invitations. This week I am offering Vegemite toast. Try a piece if you’re feeling game! xx Rowena

Sermon went well – thanks for the well-wishes! I’m always uncertain just how something is going to go over (especially since I don’t preach often!) I do love it though – there is something very special about being able to take the time to connect to something “other” and then try to translate that into words to share with other people.

Thjat’s really interesting reading how you go through the translation process giving a sermon. My grandfather was a pastor and we have many of his hand-written sermon notes. The writing was so small that I’m surprised he could read it. I remember certain sermons I heard years ago…especially about walking the walk and just putting one foot after another when times get tough. I was feeling quite lost, travelling through Europe at the time and it really hit home. xx Rowena

What’s your sermon topic?
Wow. you finished your Goodreads challenge? I said I would read 26 this year and I’m three behind. I tend to binge-read, so I think I’ll make it though. 🙂

The title of the sermon was “Unboxing God” and it’s about trying to open up the language we use in order to allow us to be able to talk to people with different beliefs than ourselves in a more productive manner 🙂 I’m trying to work up the nerve to re-frame some of it into a blog post (or, maybe even start a series of blog posts…)
I set my goal to 50… was surprised I made it! But… I did count Children’s Books I’ve read… and lately I’ve been binge-reading Babysitters Club books so it isn’t like I’ve been tackling particularly challenging reads!

Thanks for the encouragement! I wish reading blogs counted for the Goodreads challenge. I would have met it months ago. 🙂 I’d be interested in that blog series. I think people get bogged down sometimes in language, but they’re talking about a lot of the same things and ideas re: spirituality. Hope you do the blog series!
