You are Cordially Invited!

The trouble with my ideas is that sometimes they get out of hand.  They may start as a silly idea, then I begin to invest in them, and then they run away with me.

This idea is one of them.  And, honestly, I kind of love it.

Perhaps it is because I’ve been reading too many books, and watching too many movies and tv shows where there is a “Season.”  Basically translating to “a specific amount of time where all the rich people go to London to hobnob.”

I am most certainly not able to be counted in the “rich people” category, but that doesn’t mean I can’t plan!  (and… scheme!)

My understanding is that within “The Season” there are a number of different events and going-on’s, hosted  by a bunch of different people, and of course not everyone participates in every event.  And I want to facilitate a “we can hobnob without leaving the comfort of our computers” Season! (Fancy dress optional).

I’m going to create a page for this Season, but need some help.

I know I am looking for:

  •  People who are running “events” : this can be everything from a short-term blog hop, a special discussion you want to host on your page, something I haven’t even thought of yet….   I’d like to make the page that I’m creating into a calendar of events, including not just things I might host on this page, but links to all sorts of other “events” happening.
  • People who want to participate in events, even if they aren’t hosting (because lots of people participating makes it more exciting!)
  • Ideas for events!  Have something you’d like to see happen?  A vague idea of something that could be cool?  But not sure that you want to organize it?  Share the idea, and maybe we can find someone else willing to make it go — or to turn a seedling of an idea into something full-fledged.
  • A name for this particular “Season” of celebrations… names are always a challenge for me… and the one I used above seems a little long.  Surely we can put our collective minds together and come up with something more creative….

What else?  I’m sure there are other things that have slipped my mind… share those too!

Here is what I have… so far.  Keeping in mind this is very much still a fledgling idea and a number of these are rough concepts still.  Even once I have the page up (my goal is to make it a reality this weekend), it’s going to be a fluid thing… adding as we go along. [Edit: Page is up!]

September

September 21st through 27th:  Banned Book Week (next week!  Eek!)

I personally will be participating in Hannah Given‘s “Banned Book Blog Party” and Book Journey‘s event (so far).  What are some of the others happening?

October

October 17 – 19: Stage to Screen Bloagathon.

I know there are some Halloween themed things happening… what are some that you all are wanting/participating in/hosting?

November

National Novel Writing related Stuff.  I want to do SOMETHING, and I know that others might be as well.

November 23rd – 30th: Something relating to Thankfulness.

December

I’m sure plenty will be showing up around Hanukkah and Christmas  and New Years and Light.  Just, not sure what kinds of things yet.

Also, I will do something about Escapist Reads… because where there are gatherings which often involve large amounts of family (or the societal expectations of such gatherings when you are NOT attending such things) I find that some good escapist-reading is always in order.

January

New Years.  Also, MLK day.

January 16 – 19 – My birthday long weekend!  I’ll be doing… something around this, because I love birthdays.

So, what are your thoughts?  Anyone have events they want to make sure get included?  Thinking of hosting something?   Leave a comment below, or fill out the form to contact me directly and let’s make this thing happen!

In the comments below, Dawn Whitehand asked for some examples and ideas of what events could look like.  As I was writing the response I realized that it was potentially helpful information to help open up what an “event” might look like, so I’m going to post it here as well:

So, some examples could be a Blog-Hop like the Stage to Screen that’s happening in October, or the two Banned-Book things I listed, where you put out an invite for people to post about a certain focused subject over a set amount of days (and provide a way for them to easier connect with other participants, such as a schedule post on your page, or something like a linkylist , or even just ping-backs to your page, or reblogging what people post)

Another option could be to have a party on your blog: select a topic or theme, give some guidance, and invite people to share their own responses in your comments, getting a discussion going (or, an exchange). I could also see a poetry party, where people contribute the next few lines to create a poem (which you then put together in a post a little while later) I know SOMEONE did a group story like that at some point, but I can’t remember who it was otherwise I would link to it.

Heck, it could even be just a special post or short series of posts that you do, without necessarily asking others to participate. For instance, maybe you want to do a week of ugly-sweater pictures for Christmas week. Set the dates and we can add it to the list — it would be like an announcement of a show at a gallery. Or maybe you make a downloadable file of yourself reading a piece of your poetry (“Special! Author poetry-reading!” type event)

  1. This is THE BEST THING.

I’ll take a look at my blog calendar… I’ve got female characters week for the Feminist Friday series, and I’ve also got my comicaversary in October that should be getting a week of posts, but I don’t know how well they fit in as events.

There should totally be a “fancy dress” thing on or after Halloween, to take advantage of the fact that people will already be able to take pictures tires of themselves in fancy dress for that day…

    1. There will most certainly be SOME things happening in November around Novel Writing… I’ll come up with something — and hopefully others will as well. 🙂 Hoping that some creativity will strike us all!
      Blog Hops are fun 🙂

    1. Both! Those both sound like the seed for great ideas. Think a bit more, and pick some date (or date-spans) that you think you’d like to aim for. When I put together the calendar this weekend something like “poetry party at Dawn’s place [link to your page], details coming” would be great to be able to add!

… think I’ll toss some of these ideas up in the original post as well 🙂
