If We Were Having Coffee… #2

Hey, good to see you!  I’m just going to sit here and sip my coffee for a while… it’s one of those days, you know?

This weekend a lot of us are having coffee together, hosted by Gene’O.  It’s been lovely to read everyone else’s check-in, now to share a bit of my own.

If we were having coffee I’d probably be tempted to let you do most of the talking today.  For some reason I’m having trouble kick-starting my brain this morning.  I would share that I had one of those late-night-reading-nights last night, finishing up Shannon A Thompson‘s, Take me Tomorrow.  It was really good (hence, not being able to go to sleep until I finished it), and — if that was the kind of book you enjoy — I’d highly recommend it.

It’s been a long week, I’d say, though not with any real challenges — just another week where I’ve had trouble getting going on the things I need to be going on.  This afternoon I plan to do a lot of editing, and a bunch of writing.  And cleaning, oh the cleaning to be done….

I’d probably let you know that I’m missing my Maine home.  I do love it here in Oregon, but there were things about living where I did in Maine that I miss so much, and that’s been hitting me a bit hard lately.  I’m trying not to dwell on it, but, some days I just want to be able to go to that one place that I always could go to write, or finally check out that coffee shop I went to that one time, or go sit by the water and watch the tourists as they wandered about.  Cruise Ship season is in full swing out there, and that’s always entertaining to watch.

But I know I need to not dwell on that, I say, I made the decision to move and there have been some very good things that have come from that.

Let’s change the subject though, on Thursday night I tried something new.  I went to one of those places where you drink wine and they walk you through creating a painting.  I’ve never really been a painter or visual artist — I tend to leave that kind of work to my various talented friends.  But, I went with a friend because it seemed like it would be fun.  And it was!  Not only that, I actually really like the painting I ended up with.  Who would have guessed?

Kind of a blurry picture but… I’m especially proud of the bird.. that was the part I was dreading, certain it would destroy the painting.

And I would share the painting with you — grinning like a little kid overly proud of the project they just did at school.  See, see what I can do when I just let myself try?  Need to remember that.

I’d probably vaguely mention that there’s a lot going on, and that I’ve been thinking about a lot of things — but I don’t really want to get into it just now…. So now, tell me about you instead.  How has your week been?  Any plans coming up for the next week?  What books should I be adding to that “To Read” pile  — not that I need to add anything to it but… I like having a myriad of reading options so, what do you suggest?  Though still recovering from my late-night-reading, I find myself wanting to find another book that I just can’t put down.

  1. I love the colours in your painting and am very impressed that this was your first time! A book to add to the collection..hmmm…have you ever read Robert Crais? He writes a collection of stories about a private detective and his friend who are very interesting characters to say the least. I would love to meet this characters in real life, especially Joe Pike! Check the books out if you get a chance! 🙂

  2. I dabbled in painting for awhile and came up with a couple of passable ones. Diana has one I gave her years ago still hanging on her wall, but I never came up with anything that nice 🙂

It’s fun, and always nice to have a finished one to show people and talk about, but I stopped because my life got too hectic. It takes a bit of time and space to paint regularly, neither of which I have very much of.

    1. The really great thing about this one was that we got the step-by-step guide. “Use this brush,” and “use this color,” and “start here.”
Normally that kind of step-by-step direction is thee kind of thing I’d buck against… and I do admit I had a moment of wanting to ask for bright orange for the flowers and mess with the composition of the painting but… I followed the directions..
Who knows, maybe eventually I’ll get comfortable with doing my own thing 🙂

      1. That sounds like fun, but I know what you mean about wanting the orange. All the paintings I ever did, I planned the composition with sketches. The one I told you about in the first comment is a beach scene and I mixed sand into the buff white I used for the beach. (Beachscapes are some of the easiest because you only need a couple of lines and a few colors).

  3. Wow, beautifully done, and such lovely shade of red/pink. If you want a book suggestion, I’m reading “Visit from the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan. Some of the best plotting around, but the reader has no idea till the end. Egan won a Pulitzer for this (a book that appears to be a collection of short stories, except if not).

    1. Thanks… I had fun trying to mix the few colors I was given in order to get some flower-color variety. Forgetting my color basics, of course, which usually ends up with me turning everything brown or black… in this case I managed to get some nice purple/pink shades 🙂
And I like the sounds of that book — will definitely add it to my list! Thanks 🙂

    1. True, it does serve as some nice little highlights! I also like to pretend that it’s a chance to explain the potential random comments that I make on Twitter sometimes — of course, half those comments I think don’t end up posting so I’m the only one who actually sees them 🙂

          1. That’s because you understand the madness. Muffles just look at me funny.

…of course, that might be because I say most of this stuff out loud, when I’m sitting at a table by myself at a coffee shop 😛

            1. I was talking to a non-writer friend yesterday about how she enjoys watching artists work, and I began to wonder what it would be like to watch me at work. I usually keep the out-loud comments to a minimum when I’m in public…usually…but the facial expressions are probably interesting.

              1. Ha!
I’m seeing a YouTube series now- “Writers at Work”…

I know what mean though. Especially when I’m having trouble finding the right words for a face, or a sound, I’ll try them out myself for reference.

I’m sure LOTS of people have thought I’d been giving them stink eye 😛
